To accelerate fifth generation network creation we need to tackle the issue concerning providing larger support to domestic telecom equipment producers, including carrying out enabling activities to create technological clusters to ensure technology transfer. It is equally important to solve the issue of creating elements of electronic component base currently not available in Russia.

Borje Ekholm

President and CEO of Ericsson

5G networks will play the key role in the development of national infrastructure of all countries, so the operators which are the first to implement new technologies will gain advantages over their competitors.

Vasyl Latsanych

CEO of Vimpelcom PJSC

Moscow is one of the biggest and most developed megalopolises in the world. The quality of mobile communications not only directly influences the life of the citizens, but also determines the development of all industries that are forming the modern and convenient city and are crucial for its future - transport system, digital infrastructure, living environment and logistic processes. Beeline is implementing Moscow “Supercity” program, an essential part of which is the creation of high-quality, progressive network that is ready for 5G implementation and is convenient for citizens, Moscow entrepreneurs and the more actively developing urban digital ecosystem.

Mikhail Oseevskiy

President of Rostelecom

5G networks are the next stage of technology, which is supposed to become the key in digital economy.

Dmitriy Markov

Director for Information Infrastructure at Digital Economy ANO

The deployment of 5G networks in Russia will be beneficial for citizens as well as for business and government, as the possibilities of the technology will allow accelerating the development of robotics in industry, driverless transport and projects on creating smart cities.

Demetrio Russo

Vice President of Nokia in Eastern Europe

5G will radically change our industry, business and the individual experiences of every user. This technology will allow implementing broadband applications and providing us with exciting opportunities.

Sergei Emdin

CEO of Tele2 Russia

Industry members agree that the launch of the technology in Russia should not be postponed. Experts claim that 2019 will be a turning point for the development of the standard all over the world.

Eduard Lysenko

Head of the IT Department of Moscow Government

The implementation of 5G will be an impetus for the development of telemedicine, IoT, unmanned transport and many other technologies. We plan to conduct experiments with unmanned city cleaning machines, which will drive by themselves around the city and safely for the citizens. There will be a lot more other benefits for the city infrastructure with the implementation of 5G.

Anton Kozlov

Head of Innovations, Orange Business Services Russia and CIS

5G allows to reduce latency from 10 ms to 1 ms (it is important for IoT development, for example, critical production processes, remotely controlled equipment or unmanned transport); deploy separate mobile networks intended for solving different tasks (mobile communications, data exchange between drones, large data sets transfer, etc.); increase the capacity of one cell, which will ensure high connection speeds and for a larger number of subscribers in the same territory; increase bandwidth by up to 20 times, which is extremely important for different business sectors.

Igor Egorov

Vice-President for Regional Development, MTS

According to our estimates, if 80% of vehicles have 5G systems, the amount of road accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists can be reduced by half. We view 5G as a basis for creating a complex of Smart City solutions, which will connect different elements of urban infrastructure in one convenient and effective network.

Vladimir Shaporov

Direction Head, Center of Telecom Solutions Development, Technoserv Group

5G networks are intended for the implementation of Customer Experience Management (CEM) concept, as they can guess the future needs of subscribers providing high quality services considering their peculiarities determined in 3GPP specifications. The full implementation of cognitive networks, use of predictive technologies and machine learning combined with cutting-edge innovations of the fifth generation networks will help to implement the concept in full scale.

Alexandr Terekhov

B2B Mobile Solutions Department Director at Samsung Electronics

Among the prospects 5G provides, we can name development of industrial IoT, smart cities, digital medicine and improvement of VR and AR technologies. The so-called Industry 4.0 implies higher levels of processes automation, digitizing employee experience and increasing their efficiency. Smart home ecosystems will become energy-efficient and safe, and smart cities will carry out the functions of control and management of transport, infrastructure, logistics, ecology and security. With the implementation of 5G in medicine some tasks can be performed by robots during complex surgeries, when extreme accuracy is required, and the portable devices crucial for some individuals’ health (glucose monitor and electrocardiographs) will be able to transmit data to autonomous medical systems in real time. If we take VR and AR technologies and mixed reality, including 3D video and ultra-high resolution image, they have already been implemented in the mentioned sectors and will be more developed in the professional sphere.

Gevork Vermishyan

CEO of Megafon

5G will facilitate the implementation of new technologies: unmanned transport and telemedicine, IoT, VR and AR. It is crucially important to pay attention both to mass market scenarios and technologies for specific industries.

Few people would remember that when 4G was introduced 10 years ago nobody could imagine it would be possible to call a taxi using an app or watch TV series in the metro. New standards and speeds of data transfer are the basis of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. And the telecom industry is the engine of any country’s digital economy.

Alexey Krushinin

Technical Director of Tele2 Moscow macro-region

Mobile communications directly influence the level of digitization of both industries and regions. Tele2 experts also see an interesting trend - the increase in the number of data-users in small towns with population of 10-50 thousand people. The big cities already have a great mobile communications and high speed mobile internet infrastructure. To keep up with the western countries in the technology race, Russia actively develops networks based on the new generation of communications. In the near future we will witness the effect of 5G networks launch – they will boost the development of the newest mobile communications technologies for the implementation of infrastructure projects in IoT, industry, providing citizens security and other spheres; for improving the citizens’ living standards.

Sergey Andronov

Director of Network Solutions Center, Jet Infosystems

Building a large number of base stations and their connection via high speed communication channels is a big infrastructure and investment project. Each telecom operator can hardly conduct such a project alone, so the most viable scenario features several operators forming a group to build collective 5G infrastructure on the base of new architecture solutions such as OpenRAN. An alternative is to create a joint operator that will consolidate all the capacities of Russian telecom leaders’ backbone networks. The government is now facing critical challenges: they need to solve the issue with frequencies, form a roadmap of the new generation network development and decide on end devices.

The prospects of Russia becoming an innovative telecom country depend on whether these and other problems will be solved quickly and effectively.

Artyom Geniyev

Business Solutions Architect, Vmware

The main commercial potential of 5G is related to innovative services for corporate consumers (including government sector). For example, in car industry 5G will make it possible to implement more advanced navigation and entertainment systems and autonomous or remote control of individual cars or transport columns. Healthcare organizations will be able to implement VR and AR in surgery, perform diagnosis quicker in telemedicine segment due to the ultra-HD video and use robots. In smart cities segment, 5G will lead governance and transport coordination (including special vehicles) to a new level, it will also upgrade road network management and allow implementing Massive IoT technologies and facilitating digitization of all municipal services.
